So you want to start a baking business or take up baking as a hobby and have no idea what tools, equipment and utensils you will need. Throughout my journey, I have learnt that there are definite “must haves” as well as “nice to haves” Every piece of equipment and tool that I mention below is noteworthy – These are the things I use to create delicious baked treats and spectacular edible pieces of art.
These items should be enough to start you off.
- An oven (Obviously)
- Utensils (Balloon whisks, spatulas, kitchen scissors) – These are items you can never have enough of.
- Measuring spoons.
- A kitchen scale – I prefer a kitchen scale over measuring cups. The scale is a lot more accurate and is worth the investment.
- Palette knives – These are an amazing tool when spreading out icing on cake. Get them in different sizes for different sized cakes and desserts.
- Mixing bowls – You can never have enough of these in various sizes.
- Cake scraper – for smoothing out cake icing.
- Cookie cutters – Get a set of round ones to start you off.
- A hand mixer.
- A stand mixer – not always essential but it does certainly make baking a lot more efficient. It is absolutely worth the investment.
- An oven thermometer. A lot of times, built-in oven thermometers are not accurate. This little tool that you pop into your oven will give you the most accurate temperature reading.
- A cake turntable.
- A sugar thermometer.
- A sift.
- A variety of baking pans and tins.
- Skewers.
- A cooling rack.
- Piping bags.
- A rolling pin
- Baking paper
Purchasing baking supplies can be quite addictive. Be careful not to be sucked into the trap of purchasing things you don’t need. I recommend buying supplies as and when you need them. However, this is good list to start you off.
Happy shopping!
